Transcultural Nursing Certification Commission (TCNCC)

Certification Commission Update September 2007 and Bios

The Transcultural Nursing Certification Board of Directors have been hard at work over the past year revising the certification process for acquiring certification in transcultural nursing (TCN). This report will review our progress. The Curriculum Committee met several times during the past year and developed a broad content outline covering the field of transcultural nursing. This outline includes definitions of major terms, domains of interest, core competencies for each domain, and an extensive reference list and bibliography. The curriculum committee submitted the outline to a panel of international TCN experts for review and the outline was revised based on their responses. The content outline was presented to the Transcultural Nursing Society Board of Trustees and approved for use as the foundation for the revising the certification examination. The Transcultural Nursing Scholars have agreed to coordinate the development of a TCN core curriculum book which will be the basis for a study guide to prepare for taking the certification examination. The Evaluation/Test Development Committee met in June 07 to coordinate the development of a revised certification exam based in the TCN content outline. The committee members wrote test items based definitions, domains, and competencies in the content outline developed by the curriculum committee. References from published TCN literature were identified to support each test item. A call for  test item-writers went out to all certified transcultural nurses (CTNs). If you are a CTN, and would be willing to write questions (each item writer will only be asked for 10 questions over a 2 month period), please contact Mary Simpson at msimpson@pc.edu We urgently need your contribution in this most important phase of this project! The Eligibility/Credentialing Committee has begun to develop criteria for the portfolio of evidence that must be presented and approved to be eligible to take the certification examination. The Recredentailing/Recertifiction Committee is working closely with the Eligibility Committee to coordinate the development of criteria for recertifying CTNs. It is important to note that all current CTNs will maintain their certification until the work of this committee is complete.

The Finance and Grants committee is making plans to submit applications for funding to support the work of the TCNCC as soon as the revised certification examination is completed. A cultural competence grant proposal was submitted to the Health Resources Services Administration (a United States federal government organization) by the University of Michigan-Flint and Madonna University with the Transcultural Nursing Society in December 2006. The grant was not funded but the proposal will be resubmitted in December 2007. The revised certification exam will be piloted in spring/summer 2008 and be offered to eligible candidates by fall 08. The content outline will be available to assist candidates in preparation for the fall 08 exam. A curriculum book is also in development . The TCNCC Board, committee members, and I pledge to continue to work hard to complete the revision of the TCN certification process including the revised examination. Any questions regarding the current or future TCN certification process should be directed to Lisa Dobson: ldobson@madonna.edu .
