The Purnell Model for Cultural Competence 

Larry Purnell, PhD, RN, FAAN, is a Professor at the University of Delaware 

The Purnell Model is a conceptualization of cultural competence based on  multiple theories, and a research base from a multidisciplinary perspective.

 Dr. Purnell has received a number of awards for his work.  Some of them include:

 

·        2004 – Transcultural Nursing Society International Leadership Award

·        2003 – Inducted into the Rosa Parks Hall of Fame Wall of Teaching Tolerance.

·        2001 – Distinguished Service Award, Transcultural Nursing Society.
