A Giant in Nursology, A Steward of Nursing Knowledge

It is with deep respect and reflection that we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Jacqueline Fawcett—an extraordinary nurse scholar whose work fundamentally shaped the discipline of nursing, or as she so intentionally named it, nursology.

Dr. Fawcett’s influence extends across all areas of nursing. Her articulation of the nursing metaparadigm—human beings, environment, health, and nursing—continues to guide how we teach, practice, and advance our discipline. She was a tireless advocate for the use of nursing’s own body of knowledge, reminding us that what we know must inform what we do, even in the most complex and demanding moments of care.

On a personal note, I had the privilege of connecting with Dr. Fawcett after sharing how I used the metaparadigm to help RN-to-BSN students bridge the seemingly disparate worlds of theory and practice. What began as a simple expression of gratitude grew into a meaningful scholarly collaboration, resulting in an interview shared with my students and two publications together—an experience that reflects her generosity, mentorship, and enduring commitment to advancing nursing knowledge.

Dr. Jacqueline Fawcett leaves behind a legacy of intellectual rigor, clarity of purpose, and unwavering commitment to nursing as a distinct and vital discipline. She challenged us to think, to question, and to ground our practice in knowledge that is uniquely our own. This legacy resonates deeply with transcultural nursing, where understanding persons within their cultural and environmental contexts is essential. Her work strengthens our ability to provide thoughtful, theory-guided, and culturally congruent care.

As we move forward, may we honor her legacy not only in remembrance, but in action—by continuing to teach, apply, and advance nursing knowledge in ways that elevate both our discipline and the care we provide.

With gratitude for her life and contributions, we remember Dr. Jacqueline Fawcett as a true steward of nursing knowledge and a lasting voice for the discipline we are privileged to carry forward.

May we honor her legacy by continuing to think deeply, teach intentionally, and practice with knowledge that is distinctly our own.

With caring,

Dr. Rebecca Lee, PhD, MSN, RN, PHCNS-BC, CTN-A, FTNSS, FNAP
